How to clean giant plushies 🧼

Big stuffed animals are great fun. But the bigger they are, the harder it is to keep them clean and maintain them. Lets see how to clean giant stuffed animals.

Giant stuffed animals require some special attention. There are many of them. All fun and very impressive. Sadly they are also big, no pun intended, dust magnets.

🐳 So, how to clean giant stuffed animals?

It is relatively easy, but it will require some patience. The process is basically the same as washing a normal sized plushie but you have to scale it up quite a bit.

Since we are talking about giant stuffed animals, the washing machine is most likely out of the question. Unless you know of some enormous washing machine somewhere. Basically you would have to stick with the other household treatments.

Before you start, take a good look at the plushie. Remove all of the accessories that can be removed. Take note of any tears, ripped seams or other damages that would require your attention beforehand. Then it is time for the cleaning.

🎇 Start with the Vacuum, Then Baking Soda

First start with a vacuum cleaner. Vacuum the plushie on all sides whilst using the hose attachment with a small brush for best effects.

Then you can sprinkle some baking soda on the stuffed animal, gently rub it in and leave the plushie for about an hour. Then take a towel or a soft cloth and wipe the fur with a little force, this will get rid most of the the dirt and smells.

Want to do a deeper clean?

Then it is time for option 2. Take a little more baking soda and sprinkle it on the dirty part of the plushie. Then take a damp cloth and start wiping the plush again with some force, but not too much as you don’t want to damage the cover material.

This time the results should be visible both on the plushie and the cloth. The part of the plushie should be a little cleaner while the cloth should now be a little dirtier.

If needed, sprinkle some more baking soda and damp the cloth again (not too much though, you don’t want it to be soaking wet).

Now take a dry cloth and wipe the plushie again. You don’t want it to get too wet.

🛁 Other ways of cleaning plushies

You could also fill the bathtub and mix some water and detergent and soak the toy in it. We do not recommend this method, keep in mind that if you soak a giant stuffed animal it will then become very heavy from all the water it will absorb and it will also require a very, very long time to dry completely.

So a better way would be spot washing. Mix soap and water and use a soft to medium brush to scrub the toy. Alternate with wiping the area with a wet cloth until all of the soap has been rinsed off. You may have to repeat the treatment a few times, especially if the plushie is very dirty.

    ☁️ Drying and Fluff

The obvious way would be to chuck the plushies into the dryer and use fabric softener while in the washing machine. That is not always a good idea though.

First the softener can actually make things worse if it is not for the right kind of cover material. The same goes with the dryer. If you go with too hot of a setting you can harm the materials on the plushie. We recommend avoiding softeners and dryers.

A classic way is to get a towel and rub the material. If it has fur you can get a soft comb and use it to comb the fur as it dries up but it is still damp. When you see it is returning to its original shape simply leave the plush to air-dry completely. Keep checking it from time to time and use the towel to soak up damp or rough spots and reshape them.

For Plushies with fur, another way is to use a hair dryer and a comb. You can simply comb it for it to return to its normal state and be even more fluffy. For rougher or shorter fur you can also use your fingers instead of a comb or a brush.

Another way is to use a steam cleaner. Set it on a low or medium setting and give the toy a good clean. You can use the brush accessory to fluff the fur and groom it until it regains its original shape.

Your giant stuffed animals are now clean, groomed and ready for new adventures. If you are looking for more giant plushies check out the best giant plushies available on Chubbby Plushie.
